SOCIAL SERVICES INTERVENTION GROUPS.
Jason has lost everything through alcohol: his house, his friends, most of his family, his job, his car and all the material things he once had. Nevertheless, most of all he has lost himself.
He has no confidence or self-esteem and he feels isolated with alcohol, his only friend. Jason knows that he cannot go a day without drinking. He is hooked.
- I kknow that I have depression and I sometimes feel I want to end everything, including myself,-Jason says- I am in a cloud of insanity and I know that alcohol is the culprit.
His sister tries to meet him once a week and insists on taking him to a rehabilitation centre where they can help in the long process of recovery.
During this process, patients learn who they are; they recover their confidence and learn not to feel useless. According to experts, alcoholics have a very significant blood alcohol level wit physical and psychological dependence.
The rehabilitation centre is called Hope and it has a great reputation. Jason’s sister is willing to help her brother, so she will pay the cost. The rehab center’s director , Dr Julius McHill, is a well-known psychologist in Dublin and he has a great team of health professionals, including therapists, psychiatrists, social workers and peer counsellors or coaches.
Eleonor, Jason’s sister, knows that it is the best and only choice for him. The treatment lasts 6 months.
During the rehabilitation programme, patients get up early in the morning to enjoy a healthy breakfast. Then there is a yoga session or meditation to help them begin the day in a relaxed state of mind.
This is part of the treatment and recovery process as they develop new healthy habits that are intended to become routine in post-discharge life.
After meditadion, there is meeting, led by a therapist that focuses on achieving awarenes of those issues, people or surroundings in patients’ lives that have fuelled the desire to abuse drugs or alcohol. Recognising patterns or behavious, they can change or avoid certani triggers, helping them in the post-treatment.
After lunch, parents start the most intense treatment with a series of therapeutic sessions. These sessions include individual behavioural therapy, group therapy, specialised sessions or family therapy.
In Hope rehabilitation center, they also offer alternative therapy such as music therapy and dance therapy. Dr McHill considers music to be the best remedy for stress.
He thinks that all kinds of music can have therapeutic effects, for example classical music has been found to produce comfort and relaxation. In hope rehab centre, music therapy is highly personalised, making it suitable for people of any age.
Music activates regions of the brain that influence things like emotions, decision making, reward; it lowers the heart rate and blood pressure, it relaxes muscle tension and it releases endorphins…

There are many reasons for people not wanting to leave the house. The number of recluses has gone up because of the pandemic. Korea says about 3.1 per cent of young Koreans are reclusive. They "have noticeable difficulty in living a normal life". The government said children shut themselves off from society for many reasons. These include bullying, exam stress, family problems, bad parenting and technology and social media. It said the $500-a-month payment will help these young people. This means they could be less likely to have mental problems. They will also be healthier. Korea has an ageing society. It needs young people to work so they can help old people.
